Red hot summer on it’s way

We had a short visit to the city on the weekend. Mr FH’s mate was having a dinner at the casino to celebrate his 60th birthday and we had the pleasure of attending. It was so lovely to have the opportunity to dress up a little. I took these photos (on my phone, after a few champagnes!!) of our meals. Mr FH had the Black Angus steak with mushroom ravioli and I had the barramundi (the safest option I thought seeing I still have only a temporary front tooth!!) and it was beautiful. I forgot to take snaps of the entree – Mr FH had pumpkin soup and I had spinach tortellini – yummy…..I love Italian food!! Our dessert was a cherry ripe cheesecake. We had such a fun night and didn’t get to bed until nearly 3. These late night take a little more getting over than they used to!!!

While in the city I made a quick trip to Target as our second little granddaughter turns 2 on Friday and I just wanted some extras to go with her birthday present. I quickly was drawn to the homewares department and was so taken by the great display of picnic ware and china they have ready for summer entertaining.  Not long now and we will be enjoying lots of outdoor wining and dining!! I have never liked summer too much until we bought the beachhouse and now I really enjoy it. With our pool at the back and the beach at the front of the house life is pretty good. Much nicer than the long hot days on the farm where the risk of fire is always on my mind.

I really love the white china with the hearts!!!! The blue and green glasses are just gorgeous- all melamine so perfect for using near the pool. How good would these last plates in the black and orange be for a Halloween table!!!
Have a lovely week. I have all of my grandies coming to stay this week….not all at once thankfully so life will be busy!

Cold down under

Ok…I need you to all turn up your air conditioning before you go any further!!! I’m sure a lot of you forget I’m on the other side of the world (yes, I do it too!!) so we are just coming into winter. We have just finished our seeding (planting our crops) for the year. We have 1600 acres of wheat, oats and barley planted ready to pop up out of the lovely warm soil. D No 1 and her two little boys came for the weekend and we had such a lovely time. The weather was perfect for gathering wood, picnicking, tractor rides and  generally just being out and about on the farm
Today, however things are a little different. I helped Mr FH for a while this morning and it was quite chilly so I set myself a nice little lunch table on the ottoman by the fire when I returned.
As you can see I needed a cute hat and gloves while I was outside but once I discarded them when I came inside I thought they made the perfect start to a little table setting. Spicy pumpkin soup was just perfect followed by a cup of hot chocolate. (I bet you are sweating just reading this!!).
I just love to have the fire burning…there’s something really comforting about the flames of the nice warm fire on a winter’s day.

I grabbed this old wooden tray to use to stabilise my cups and I see now I should have oiled it a little to freshen it up but too late now!! Isn’t this the cutest little hat with the gorgeous chunky buttons. I bought it from my sister’s gift shop but when I tried it on I looked TERRIBLE so I have given it to my daughter who looked super cute in it!!

Baby Shower Luncheon - Part 3!!

OK - I promise this will be my last post on the baby shower!! I just have to show you some of the great food we had - I have a funny relationship with food - I love to eat it but am not sooo fond of cooking it. My daughters can't believe I don't love to cook like they do but after 35 years of cooking it really does become a bit of a chore!! I must say though I really did excel myself last weekend - even if I pat myself on the back!!

We enjoyed lots of homemade sausage rolls, quiches and pinwhells as well as this fabulous cob loaf. It was a scooped out cob loaf of bread filled with a great cheesy mix then put back in the oven to crisp up. We served it with pieces of toasted garlic bread - very yummy!! DN 1 made these great little pikelets with mustard in them then topped them with a basil leaf, cherry tomato and bocconcini - just devine!

I made these waffles - they are just a batter mix and fried in shortening which we topped with curried prawns or cheesy asparagus. Very easy and very yummy!

We also served sushi and a delicious chicken/mango/avocado mix served in papadams but I don't have a photo of them on my camera.

As usual in our family desserts were a major attraction - the chocolate cupcakes (the plate was full to start with!) were really popular as were the individual mint cheesecakes.

We had a stand of cupcakes decorated in pink or blue which were fabulous as well as a plate of tiny cupcakes with baby footprints on them - if you look carefully they have only four toes - the cakes were so small we could only fit four on!!

We are still waiting for the little bundle to arrive - due in two weeks so we are all getting very excited!!

Today I am joining Foodie Friday with my baby shower luncheon.
