Getting rid of dust bunnies!!

As our long hot summer is drawing to a close I have been busy trying to get rid of some of the dust that seems to be coating everything. In fact I’m beginning to think this whole house is joined together with one big cobweb. It just makes me feel so settled to have my beautiful china sparkling clean. Cushions and curtains have been laundered and floors and windows washed in my sunroom.  One room done and lots more to start on!!

I’m planning on starting out in the garden as soon as the weather cools a little more. We had such a busy weekend…..after 13 years we will have none of our kids living in our city unit so on Friday we travelled to the city to complete some maintenance before our tenants move in. I must admit I do feel a little sad that we won’t have that as our base. We do have two of our kids we can always stay with or our beach house is only one hour away. In fact after we had the quick cleanup we stayed with our daughter and her family for a night then we drove to the beach house. We are now home at the farmhouse so that makes it 4 different beds in 4 nights!!! Talk about crazy!
Have a lovely week!!

Cool Blue

We are still experiencing terrible hot weather here – thankfully we have air conditioning and a pool and the beach nearby so it is bearable!! The farmhouse is a little different….no beach, no pool and air conditioning but not right through the house so our trip home to check on things and do a few chores was a little hard to take! I did manage to finish off some office work and get rid of an amazing number of spider webs which have just appeared in two weeks! We are back at the beachhouse now so I thought I would share this simple ‘hot day’ table I set the other day. I thought the simple blue and white table with no cloth and simple centrepiece was the ‘coolest’ thing I could do.
Mr FH and I are here at the farmhouse by ourselves this week..it’s so quiet without our families all here with us but I must admit I will be looking forward to them coming to visit again soon.

I bought these placemats off ebay ages ago. They are just so not me!!!  I think they were the first things I ever won and I was so excited but when they arrived I nearly died! They have been stashed away in the cupboard ever since!! The seem to be just right for a table to make us feel cool.

Blue Willow teacups

Did you ever sit with your Nana and share a cup of tea in a Blue Willow teacup? I know I did and just looking at it brings back many memories.  This week’s table shows that the old Blue Willow is still as lovely today. I have a whole dresser (here) of gorgeous blue and white china. I say I’m not a ‘blue’ person but a whole dresser filled with blue and white china just catches my eye.
I have teamed the old fashioned china with a very modern piece of fabric I have used for a runner. Pink table mats I have had forever team nicely  with the runner. The blue glasses I picked up from the thrift store for $1.50 each.
Once again I have used my pretty polka dot flatware. This is my favourite and going on the comments I have received lots of others love it too!!!

A collection of blue pitchers and a couple of blue and white china balls sit a top a pretty pink cake stand in the centre. The single candlestick was the first gift I received from Son No1 when he started high school and had woodworking classes! I hope this table brings back memories of sipping tea in Blue Willow cups with your nana.

Everything blue at the farmhouse

I’m not sure why but I seem to be setting ‘blue’ tables lately. Not that I’m a blue person, in any shape or form but they just seem to be happening!!. I came across these lovely spotted plates recently (on sale, of course) so they just had to come home with me. I love the look of the timber table, burlap runner, woven mats and the twisted willow. Just to bring out the blue I packed blue and white hydrangeas into a little bird cage.

Isn’t it funny how photos change the colours of some things and not others. The candles and wine glasses looked brown in real life but are appearing purple in the photos. Lucky it’s not summer here in Australia because I think the combination of twisted willow and candles wouldn’t really be very safe!!

My $2 tablescape!

We came home from the beach house on Sunday afternoon after a relaxing  time ..afternoon naps, facials, massage and dinner. Just what I needed to recharge my batteries.
I’ve had a funny day today…..no internet or mobile telephone all day….yes, ALL DAY! (Note: This actually went on for 48hrs!!! Grrr) It was like I had my arms cut off. So I got busy and did a bit of cooking, my ironing and mowed the lawn.
I actually set this pretty table too! I am hoping I can publish this before the end of the month!!!! I was looking at the table after I had finished and realised most things on the table cost me $2. The gorgeous taupe dinner plate and side plate were both $2 each as were the pretty blue side plates. The blue pots were also $2!. The spotted napkins were ….you guessed it -$2. Everything else I had. No doubt most of them were on sale too! I needed something to cover the white of the salad plate so I used two coffee filters to tone it down a little.

I love these little pots – I think they will be great for soups, chicken and leek pies and even some little breakfast delights.
I don’t have a lot of blue in my house but by matching it with natural colours it just seemed right.
